Week 1 (July 11-12th)

Hey guys, Jim here with a quick recap of the osu! Summer League. After a few months of prep, the osu! Summer League finally kicked off, and the first week’s games definitely did not disappoint. We’ve got a lot of notable names in our entrant pool, including KevEz, captin1 and Natalia (other known as Kitteh). Entrants ranging from the low 10k range to as high as rank #55 paired off against closely ranked adversaries and delivered an exciting first round.

One of the major parts of performing in a muscle memory based game as osu! is just simply practice and preparation. Players were often reminded to throw in the extra plays to try to cover their weaker aspects and the match results showed the fruits of labor quite clearly. The mod pick of this week with the highest win rate was Hard Rock.

Arguably the most unforgiving mod in the game, players who had taken the time to practice with it and use it against their opponents came away with a victory over 90% of the time. With an average HP drain of around 9.8 and OD’s nearly impossible to accurately land without preparation, this week’s Hard Rock picks such as Outer Science were crucial to deciding rounds.

Nearly every match played resulted in very close 1-1 scores and resorted to our tiebreaker map to decide the winner. In the 8 matches broadcasted on stream, 7 of them had been decided by our tiebreaker map, World’s End Girl’s Rondo. In osu! there are several elements that make up a map and measure a player’s skill: speed, streams, jumps, aim and reading to name a few.

Every map in the tiebreaker map pool was selected to focus on a select few of these traits. While the map has a relatively low BPM of 175 with lots of down time and free combo to rack up, the map’s signature sliders were the bane of many players when it came down to the wire.

World’s End Girl’s Rondo comes in at only a severely underrated 5.27 star count, the slider velocity and reading required to successfully hold combo throughout the entire song is unparalleled. Most tiebreaker matches had come down to whoever would break first, but as matches such as [Neetwork] and Keepu’s, consistency still has the chance to be the win condition despite making it through the sliders.

• Load your current beatmaps by pointing to your root osu! folder
• Open our collection file
• Search for and download beatmaps that you are missing
• Join our collection file with your collection file
• Save the joined collection file as your new osu! collections
